Fast computation of a large system of PDEs

Hi,

I have a general question. I know that for solving a time dependent system of PDEs I need to create a mixed finite element space and I have successfully done this before. However, I only had 5 equations in my system and it took me 2 days on an HPC cluster to get the answer. Now suppose I want to bump this number up to 30. I have heard that the memory might not support this and if it does I can imagine how much longer it will take to get an answer. So does anyone know of a method that will speed up the process or lighten the computational burden? Any hint or reference would be appreciated.

Best,

There are many things you might do.
First consider if you want to use a direct or iterative solver: a brief discussion of direct and iterative solvers can for instance be found here and here.
